Arched, Angled & Shaped Window Shutters — What's Actually Possible

Every so often we walk into a home, look at a window and know we're in for a bit of workshop problem-solving. Half-moon arched hallways, triangular gable ends in converted lofts, round porthole windows over the front door, angled cottage windows tucked into a roof pitch — Northern Ireland has more shaped windows than most people realise. And almost every one of them can be shuttered.

What's possible

• Round-top / arched — the most common shaped window. Half a full-height panel with a curved head.
• Half-moon / semicircle — a fixed shutter with fanned louvres radiating from the centre.
• Full circle / porthole — divided into quarters or half-panels, hinged from the sides.
• Angled / gable-end triangle — a fixed or bi-fold triangular panel, matched to the roof pitch.
• Hexagonal or octagonal — rare but doable, usually in period stair windows.

How we template

For any shape that isn't a rectangle, we bring a card template on the survey visit. We cut it in-situ against the window opening — inside the reveal, exactly where the shutter frame will sit — so we're capturing the actual shape, not a drawing of it. That card comes back to the workshop and every panel is cut and finished off it.

The louvre question on shaped windows

On arched and half-moon shutters the louvres either fan (radiate from a centre pivot) or step down (parallel to the base). We recommend fan for pure half-moons because it echoes the geometry. We recommend stepped for arched full-height panels because it aligns visually with the louvres of neighbouring windows.

The fixed-vs-operable choice

Full round-top and half-moon shutters can be either fixed (louvres set at one angle, panel doesn't open) or operable (louvres tilt, panel opens on hinges). Fixed is roughly 40% cheaper and looks identical when closed — most customers choose fixed for high windows they'll never actually reach.

Almost every window can be shuttered. It just takes a card template, a good workshop and a bit of patience.
