Shutter Colour Trends for Northern Irish Homes in 2026
Pure gloss white ruled shutters for a decade. In 2026 it's finally on the way out. Almost every quote we sign in Northern Ireland right now is a warmer off-white, a paper-soft neutral or a properly bold heritage colour. Here are the five we're fitting most, in order of popularity.
01 · Slaked Lime (Little Greene 105)
The winner. A soft, warm off-white with a barely-there green undertone that reads timeless against Victorian architrave, Georgian panelling and 2020s Farrow & Ball-painted new-builds alike. This is what we now install if the customer says 'just do white'. It looks alive in daylight and calm at dusk.
02 · Cornforth White (Farrow & Ball 228)
A cool warm-grey (yes really) that we've fitted in probably fifty Belfast, Lisburn and Bangor family homes in the last twelve months. Sits beautifully next to painted Shaker kitchens and looks intentional against limestone hearths.
03 · Bone (Farrow & Ball 15)
The most 'expensive' looking off-white in the range. Slightly yellow-warm — reads as bespoke joinery rather than a shutter, especially in south-facing living rooms where afternoon sun hits it.
04 · French Grey Pale (Little Greene 161)
A pale grey with green undertones — our first choice for coastal homes in Bangor, Holywood and Kilkeel. Reads as driftwood-soft against sea light.
05 · Downpipe (Farrow & Ball 26)
The bold pick, but a growing one. Very dark charcoal-grey shutters framing a period sash window are the single most-photographed detail on our recent Belfast installs. We won't recommend it in every room — but where it works, it's transformative.
White shutters used to be a safe default. In 2026 they've become the wrong default in about half the rooms we survey.
